Game Recap: Hobart Lacrosse | | Ken DeBolt

Fast start, late stand earns lacrosse 1st win

VICTOR, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team got off to a fast start against Siena College and made a late defense stand to escape the Pinnacle Athletic Campus with a 16-15 win. The Statesmen evened their record at 1-1, while the Saints slip to 0-2.

Senior Frank Brown produced three goals and a career-high three assists for a career-high six points to lead Hobart. Classmate Max Romm netted a game-high four goals and sophomore Chris Aslanian added a goal and three assists. Junior J. Andrew Spallanzani won 11-of-20 faceoffs with three ground balls and sophomore Matthew Pedicine was 7-of-14 at the X. Pedicine and sophomore Stanny Gilbertson shared team-high honors with four ground balls apiece as the Statesmen had a 28-24 edge over Siena. Sophomore Tristan Dougherty earned the win in goal with 10 saves.

Siena got a team-high five points (2-3) from Mike Reilly, one more than Chris Robertson (3-1). Brian Prunty also produced a hat trick. Senior Joe Arcarese logged game-highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while also scoring a goal. Nick Matzelevich also picked up five GBs and caused two turnovers. Goalie Aaron Lewis made seven saves.

Hobart raced out of the gate with goals by Gilbertson, Romm, Aslanian, and senior Mark Darden to build a 4-0 lead with about five minutes left in the first quarter. Robertson got Siena on the board with an extra-man goal with about four and a half minutes remaining in the opening frame, but Romm and senior Sean Donnelly followed with Hobart goals to make it 6-1 after 15 minutes. The Saints finished 3-of-5 with the extra man.

Senior Kevin Murphy made it 7-1 early in the second quarter. Siena sandwiched goals around Brown's first tally of the game to make it 8-3 with eight minutes remaining in the half. Hobart rattled off four straight goals to take its biggest lead of the game 12-3. Brown had a hand in three of the four goals, hitting the back of the net twice and assisting on sophomore Bryan Hancock's tally.

Siena started to claw its way out of the hole with three goals in a span of 26 seconds to go into halftime trailing 12-6. The Saints scored four of the first five goals of the second half to whittle their deficit down to 13-10, but Hobart senior Tanner John and Hancock netted back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to make it 15-10 with less than nine minutes remaining.

Siena answered with back-to-back goals of its own, just 12 seconds apart, to again close the gap to three. First-year Justin Scott scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with less than five minutes to go.

Siena fought to the last getting goals from Reilly, John-Michael Tokar, and Brian Prunty to make it a one-goal game with 50 seconds left. Pedicine won the ensuing faceoff and Gilbertson was able to run off about 20 seconds before getting caught in a triple team and turning the ball over near the end line in Hobart's offensive zone.

Siena got off two shots in the final 10 seconds, but the first one sailed over the cage and the second went wide thanks to a well-timed check from junior defenseman Connor Flood.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when the Statesmen complete their season-opening three-game homestand against Cornell. The 136th meeting of the series is scheduled to faceoff at noon on Boswell Field.
