GENEVA, N.Y. – The Hobart College lacrosse team used a 5-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from Cornell 16-8 in a non-conference game on Boswell Field this afternoon. The win was the Statesmen's first win over the Big Red since 2004, when Hobart won 12-10 on McCooey Field.
 
Senior Frank Brown (3g, 2a) and first-year Justin Scott (4g, 1a) led the way for Hobart (2-1) with five points each. Senior Max Romm matched his career-high, set last week against Siena, with four goals. Fellow senior Tanner John also recorded a hat trick for the Statesmen. Sophomore Matthew Pedicine won 10-of-14 faceoffs and collected a team-high three groundballs, while junior J Andrew Spallanzani was 6-of-12 at the X. Senior Jackson Brown earned the win in goal with 18 saves. This was the third time in his career that Brown made double digit saves against the Big Red.
 
Cornell (0-2) got a team-high three points from Connor Fletcher and Andrew Keith. Both Fletcher and Keith produced hat tricks for the Big Red. Goalie Christian Knight and Paul Rasimowicz produced a game-high five GBs. Rasimowicz was 8-of-18 at the X for Cornell. Knight made 11 saves in the Big Red goal.
 
The Statesmen raced out to a 3-0 thanks to two goals from Romm and one from Scott. Romm's second goal of the game was an extra-man goal with 6:44 remaining in the opening quarter. Hobart finished the game 1-6 with the extra man. Cornell got on the board with just under four and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jeff Teat scored his second goal of the year. Two minutes later, Keith deposited his first goal of the game. 
 
The Big Red tied the game at the 13:03 mark of the second quarter thanks to Fletcher's second goal of the season and first of the game.  Hobart regained the lead thanks to a four goal run. John kick started it with his third goal of the season at the at the 10:17 mark of the second quarter. Scott, Brown, and John scored three goals 70 seconds apart to extend the Statesmen's lead to 7-3. After Scott's goal at 2:42, Brown scored his first goal of the game, fifth of the season, 11 seconds later. Pedicine won the faceoff forward and flipped it to Brown, who was standing right in front of the cage. Fletcher tacked on his second goal of the game with three seconds left in the half. Hobart led 7-4 at the half but that was as close as the Big Red would get the rest of the way.
 
The Statesmen opened the second half with a five goal run thanks to goals from Brown, Romm, sophomore Chris Aslanian, John, and Scott. Keith and Fletcher answered back for Cornell with their second and third goals of the game, respectively. Brown completed his hat trick with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter with a spectacular backhanded shot from the right goal post. Teat scored his second goal of the game for Big Red with one second remaining in the third. Knight chucked the ball the length of the field, Teat picked up the bouncing ball, and flicked it into the goal just before the horn sounded.
 
Keith completed his hat trick to open the fourth quarter. Hobart closed out the game on another 3-0 run thanks to Romm's fourth goal of the game, senior Sean Donnelly's second of the season, and Scott's fourth of the game and team-leading ninth of the season.
 
The Statesmen's 16 goals were the most in a game against Cornell since their 23-10 win over the Big Red on April 23, 1986.
 
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, March 4, when it travels to Binghamton for its first road game of the season. Faceoff is scheduled for noon in Vestal, N.Y.
