Hot-shooting Statesmen stop Saints

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team had five players reach double digits in tonight's 92-78 win over Liberty League co-leader St. Lawrence University. Sophomore Colin Dougherty led the Statesmen with 20 points and a game-high three steals.

Dougherty was a 7-of-13 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. First-year Tucker Lescoe enjoyed a hot-shooting night, making 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-7 3-point tries, for 16 points. First-year Sam Allen produced 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting with a pair of triples. Sophomores Matt Walsh and Jamal Lucas each added 10 points. Lucas also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and shared game-high honors with four assists with teammate, senior Pete Drescher.

Hobart (12-8, 7-4) shot a season-high 54 percent from the field with 10 3-pointers and shot 74 percent from the free throw line. The Statesmen did a good job protecting the basketball, making just eight turnovers.

St. Lawrence (16-4, 9-2) got a game-high 22 points from senior Kyle Edwards. Junior Riley Naclerio and Willie Zachery both finished with 19 points. Naclerio also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Saints shot 40 percent from the floor with eight 3-pointers and 73 percent at the free throw line.

Hobart led the game for most of the first half. SLU senior Kieran Miller made a pair of free throws at the 12:27 mark to make it a two-point game, but a steal and breakaway dunk by Dougherty sparked a 9-2 Hobart run that was capped off with a 3-pointer from Walsh.

The Saints responded with a 13-3 to take their only lead of the game. Zachery had a team-high five points during the surge that sent the visitors into halftime with a 33-32 lead.

Junior Luke Ruddy made a layup for the first bucket of the second half, reclaiming the lead for Hobart. The Statesmen maintained a one or two possession lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the half. A 10-4 Hobart run, powered by a pair of 3-pointers from Lescoe, gave the Purple and Orange a 12-point advantage.

St. Lawrence got back within four twice near the six-minute mark, both times on field goals by Naclerio. However that's as close as they would get. Hobart used a 10-3 burst push its lead back into double digits with three minutes remaining and went 5-of-6 at the line in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Both teams will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Statesmen will host Clarkson University (11-9, 6-5) while the Saints will travel to RIT (12-9, 6-6).
