Dougherty’s double-double leads Hobart over Clarkson

GENEVA, N.Y.— On Senior Day, sophomore Colin Dougherty stole the show with his first collegiate double-double, leading the Hobart College basketball team to an 80-56 win over Clarkson University this afternoon. The Statesmen improved to 13-8 overall and 8-4 in the Liberty League while the Golden Knights slip to 11-10, 6-6.

Hobart never trailed Clarkson and the only tie of the contest was the scoreless 46 seconds that preceded senior Thomas Campions' 3-pointer. The Statesmen shot 40 percent from the floor with eight 3-pointers and made nearly as many free throws (26) as the Knights attempted (27).

Dougherty was 5-of-11 shooting and went 10-of-15 at the free throw line for 20 points. First-year Tucker Lescoe also had a hot hand, sinking three 3-pointers on the way to a 19-point game. First-year Sam Allen also hit double digits with 10 points and a game-high four steals. Dougherty also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds with first-year Edens Fleurizard chipping in eight as the Statesmen enjoyed a 43-35 advantage on the glass.

Clarkson shot 37 percent from the field with three 3-pointers. Senior Derek Hart recorded a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots. Sophomore Liam Ellis also had a double-double on 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Drew Zlogar added 10 points.

The Statesmen seized control of the game with an 11-3 run that Dougherty started with four straight makes at the charity stripe and Lescoe capped with a 3-pointer. The three-minute surge saw the Hobart lead grow from seven points to 15. From that point on, the Statesmen were able to maintain a double digit lead.

Lescoe led all scorers with 10 points at halftime.

In the second half, the Golden Knights got within 11 twice inside the six-minute mark, but the Statesmen squashed any hopes of a comeback with a 12-1 run. Junior Andrew Riviello capped that run with a 3-pointer near the two-minute mark.

With four games remaining in the regular season, Hobart sits in third place in the Liberty League, two games behind co-leaders St. Lawrence and Skidmore. The Statesmen are a half game ahead of fourth place Union. Clarkson is in fifth place, just outside of the four-team playoff window, one and a half games back of the Dutchmen.

Hobart will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, when the Statesmen visit Skidmore. The Golden Knights will return home to face Bard on Friday night.
