Herons, Red Dragons tie 1-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. - For the third straight game, the William Smith College ice hockey team recorded a point in an ECAC West conference game. The Herons extended their unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-1 tie with Cortland at Alumni Arena this afternoon.

William Smith (4-11-5, 1-8-4) took control of the game right from the opening faceoff. The Herons fired the first five shots of the game on Red Dragon goalie, Kelly Farinella, and finished the first period with a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. William Smith could not put a puck past Farinella and the game remained scoreless at the end of the first period.

Junior Krista Federow gave the Herons a 1-0 lead at 11:37 of the second period. With William Smith on the power play, she collected a pass from Kate Klimaszewski below the goal line, carried the puck around the back of the net into the slot, and wristed a shot over Farinella's glove hand. Sophomore Stephanie Hampton was also credited with an assist on Federow's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Just under three minutes later, the Red Dragons (2-17-1, 1-11-1) tied the game 1-1. Sydney Carlucci flipped a shot past Maggie Salmon. Josie Fletcher and Makenzie Wright were credited with assists on the goal.

William Smith held a slight 11-10 edge in shots on goal in the third period, but neither team could send the game-winner across the goal line.

The Herons took all five shots in the overtime period.

Salmon improves to 3-7-3 on the season, stopping 23 of the 24 shots she faced in 64:40 in the William Smith goal. At the opposite end of the rink, Farinella made 41 saves in 65 minutes of action.

The Herons finished today's game 1-for-6 on power play and held Cortland to one goal on its seven power-play attempts. William Smith killed off a big 5-on-3 power play for Cortland in the final three minutes, limiting the Red Dragons to a single shot.

William Smith and Cortland will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, Feb. 5. Faceoff at The Cooler is scheduled for 4 p.m.
