GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team defeated Cortland 3-2 in an ECAC West game at The Cooler this afternoon. Three different players scored goals for the Herons as they extended their unbeaten streak to four games.
William Smith (5-11-5, 2-8-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 9:27 of the first period when sophomore
Stephanie Hampton fired a one-timer from the slot past Kelly Farinella. Hampton's fifth goal of the season was assisted by first-year
Gina Scibetta. The Herons outshot Cortland 9-3 in the opening period. The two teams combined for more blocked shots, 15, than shots on goal, 12, in the first 20 minutes.
The Red Dragons (2-18-1, 1-12-1) tied the game 1-1 at 11:03 of the second period when Josie Fletcher wristed home a power-play goal. The goal came just after William Smith had killed off 1:30 of 5-on-3 time.
The Herons regained the lead when first-year
Taylor Morash picked the upper left corner of the goal behind Farinella with a wrist shot. The unassisted goal was Morash's fifth of the season. Just under three minutes later, sophomore
Lindsay Brown tucked home a loose puck for her third goal of the season. The goal was set up by
Tess Madarasz and
Rebecca Begley. Begley fired a shot from the point, Madarsz collected the rebound, and slid the puck to Brown, who wrapped around the back of the net and tucked the puck between Farinella's leg and the right goal post.
Cortland did not go quietly, however. Emily King scored an unassisted goal at 6:24 of the third period.
Maggie Salmon started in the William Smith goal and made 23 stops on 25 shots. At the opposite end of the rink, Kelly Farinella made 22 saves in 25 attempts. In total, the teams finished the game with 34 blocked shots, William Smith, 18, and Cortland, 16.
William Smith finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while the Red Dragons were 1-for-6.
The Herons will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 11-12, when they travel to take on Potsdam. Both games with the Bears are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
