Herons topple Drew in season opener

The 20th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team cruised to a 6-1 win over Drew in its 2017 season opener in the Drew Fall Festival at Ranger Stadium in Madison, N.J. this evening. Five different players scored goals in the victory for the Herons.

Senior Hannah Wood led the way for William Smith notching five points on two goals and an assist. Fellow senior Alexandra Frary and junior Fallon Adair also recorded a goal and an assist in the game.

Senior Maura Moran opened the scoring for William Smith in the 12th minute with a penalty stroke goal.  Moran is now 9-for-9 on penalty strokes in her career. Wood doubled the Herons lead just over six minutes later. Off of a penalty corner, she blasted a shot from the top of the arc that beat the Rangers' goalie on the left side. Adair was credited with an assist. Frary gave William Smith a 3-0 lead in the 33rd minute. She collected a pass from sophomore Bennett Tierney and buried the ball in the back of the cage. The assist was Tierney's first collegiate point. Thirty-six seconds later, junior Sierramarie Fitzgerald collected a Wood rebound and deposited the ball into the goal.

Drew broke the shutout 99 seconds into the second half when Madi Sheetz found the back of the net. William Smith regained a four-goal lead in the 40th minute when Adair collected a rebound in front of the goal and flipped the ball past the Ranger goalie. Wood closed out the scoring with her second goal of the night in the 42nd minute. Frary was credited with the assist.
