Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team began the 2017-18 season hosting the Mary Hosking Invitational this weekend. The Herons collected wins in B flight doubles and D flight singles this afternoon to conclude a strong weekend at the newly resurfaced HWS Tennis Center.

Charlotte Engebrecht and
Olivia Engebrecht posted a 4-0 record to capture B flight doubles while sophomore
Leland Barclay won D flight singles.

In their first collegiate tournament, the Engebrecht sisters defeated Rochester Institute of Techonology's Diana Kulawiec and Annie Steinbrink 8-4 to capture the tournament crown. The Engebrecht's earned a spot in the final with an 8-6 win in the semifinals over their teammates
Caitlin Chichora and
Katelyn Nguyen. Yesterday, Olivia and Charlotte won their first collegiate match 8-1 and their quarterfinal match 8-4. Â Chichora and Nguyen won their first collegiate match 9-8 and then won 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
Taylor Ferrari and
Morgan Hamre also competed in B flight. They lost their opening round match but bounced back with a pair of wins to reach the consolation championship match.

On Saturday, Barclay opened her tournament with an 8-1 victory over Nazareth's Elna Alteri. In the quarterfinals, she knocked off Carmen Navas-Davis 8-2. This morning she defeated her teammate first-year
Karen Bulnes 8-2 to reach the championship match. In the finals, she beat the Tigers' Julia Smolowitz 8-4. Bulnes made her collegiate debut with an 8-2 win over the Golden Flyer's Erin Schantz. In the quarterfinals, Bulnes defeated St. Lawrence's Maddie Nasch 9-8. Sophomore
Morgan Hamre won her first round match over Ithaca's Sam Brown before losing in the quarterfinals.

Michaelann Denton and first-year
Dina Rigas represented the Herons in both A flight singles and doubles. Denton reached the semifinals while Rigas won her collegiate debut before falling in the quarterfinals. In doubles play, they won their first round match before falling in the quarterfinals.

In all, William Smith finished the weekend with a 15-10 record in singles play and a 7-5 record in doubles matches.

The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 21 when they travel to take on Brockport in a non-conference match. That weekend, Sept. 22-24, William Smith will be in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. for the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
