GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College first-year
Kyle Mangold scored the lone goal as the Statesmen soccer team defeated visiting Geneseo 1-0 in a non-league game played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.
The Statesmen notched their second straight win and improved to 2-2-1 overall, while the Knights fell to 3-2-1 this season. Junior
Alec Kaminer played all 90 minutes in goal for Hobart and stopped two shots to secure the shutout. It was his first shutout of the season.
The Statesmen came inches away from scoring 15 minutes into the match. Sophomore
Nate Cary blasted a shot that went just over the crossbar. Hobart did break through in the 32nd minute. Junior
Sam Farman pushed a pass ahead to Mangold. The Geneseo goalie, Dillon Medd, came out to play the ball, but wasn't able to, and instead Mangold blasted a shot into the empty net. It was his first collegiate goal.
The Statesmen almost made it to 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Farman again pushed a pass ahead this time to sophomore
Cooper O'Connell. Medd came sprinting out to make a play on the ball, but was not able to. O'Connell's shot at the open net went just wide of the left post.
Geneseo's best scoring chance of the game came just before Hobart's first goal. Alex Clar collected a feed from Gavin Gleasman at the top of the box, but Kaminer came running out to make the point blank stop on Clar's blast.
It seemed the Knights had another opportunity to get on the board late in the second half. After Hobart was whistled for a foul with about eight minutes to go, Nick Keneally booted a free kick into a crowd in front of the goal, but Kaminer darted out and grabbed the ball before any Geneseo player was able to get a shot off.
Hobart finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots and a 6-1 lead in corners. Medd finished with four saves in goal for Geneseo.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 23, when they travel to take on Skidmore in their Liberty League opener at 3 p.m.
