GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team was edged by Eastern Connecticut State 1-0 in the first game of the 2017 Hobart Soccer Alumni Classic.
The lone goal of the game came in the 39th minute for the Warriors on an unsettled situation after a corner kick. The Statesmen finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots and a 4-1 lead in corners. Ryan Murphy played all 90 minutes in goal for the Warriors, earning the shutout with four saves.
The Statesmen outshot the Warriors 9-6 in the first half and had a few just misses. First-year
August Martini blasted a shot that sailed just above the crossbar from about 20 yards out with 26:20 on the clock. Sophomore
Tristan Cornell Roberts had a shot go just wide of the far right post with 20:21 left in the first.
It was Eastern Connecticut State that broke through late in the first half. Max Parent found the back of the net on a shot right from the left side after a short pass from Nick Starkowski.
The Warriors almost made it 2-0 late in the first half. Sam Hurlburt had a one-on-one with Hobart junior goalie
Alec Kaminer. Hurlburt attempted to evade Kaminer and then just got a shot off, but Kaminer got a hand on it immediately to deny the chance. Kaminer played all 90 minutes and finished with three saves.
The Statesmen (0-1) will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 3, when they face Brandeis (0-1) at 3:30 p.m. The Judges fell to Cortland 3-2 in the second game of the Hobart Soccer Alumni Classic this afternoon on Cozzens Field.
