Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- Five members of the William Smith College tennis team competed in the 2017 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships this weekend.

Dina Rigas and
Charlotte Engebrecht represented the Herons in the singles draw. Denton drew Vassar's Courtney Geiss in Friday's first round match. Geiss edged Denton 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 10-6. Greenberg was also paired with a Brewer in the first round. Tara Edwards emerged victorious 6-1, 6-0. Engebrecht and Rigas dropped their first round matches 6-2, 6-1. Playing in the consolation draw, Denton defeated Hamilton's Ajla Karabegovic 8-4. Denton dropped her next match to Vassar's Meghan Rodick 8-0.

In doubles play, Denton and Rigas won their first round match 8-2 over a team from New Paltz. They were bested in the second round by Flyora Shiyanova and Coco Kulle 8-4. Shiyanova and Kulle will battle for the doubles championship.

Charlotte and
Olivia Engebrecht also represented the Herons in the doubles draw. They were defeated by Camila Garcia and Sraya Gudipudi in the first round of the championship draw. The Engebrechts bounced back with an 8-5 win in the first round of the consolation draw. They were defeated by Union's Natalia Pezzuco and Paige Webster 8-2. The Engebrechts lost in the consolation quarterfinals 8-2.

Sixty-four of the region's best singles players and 32 of the top doubles team, representing 16 institutions participated in the annual championship. The winners of each draw will advance to the ITA Oracle Cup Championships Oct. 11-15 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. The semifinals and finals of the singles draw and the doubles championship match will be contested Sunday, Sept. 24.

William Smith will be back in action on Oct. 4, when it travels to Rochester for its Liberty League opener against Rochester Institute of Technology. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
