GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College sophomore
Ben Orr scored the game-winning goal 4:39 into overtime to secure a 2-1 victory for the Statesmen soccer team over visiting RIT today on Cozzens Field. With the Liberty League win, Hobart improves to 3-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
The Tigers fall to 2-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Liberty League. Hobart is now 1-1-2 in overtime games this year.
The first half proved scoreless. Hobart's best scoring chance was on a blast by sophomore Tristan Cornell-Roberts, but the Tigers' keeper laid out for the diving stop.
Junior
Derrick Acheampong notched his first goal of the season to put Hobart up 1-0 in the 52nd minute. After a Statesmen free kick from just outside of the box, sophomore Nate Carey's header found Acheampong who fired his shot from right in front into the back of the net.
Just 39 seconds later, RIT's Jared Short took advantage of a corner kick to knot the score at one. Nick Simone sent in the corner and found Short out in front. Hobart's junior keeper
Alec Kaminer came out to play the ball, and Short caught him out of position and scored on the open net.
Neither team could find the game winner through regulation. The Tigers came inches away, however, when Anthony DeFeo drilled a shot off the crossbar in the 85th minute.
Orr clinched the victory for the Statesmen 4:39 into the extra period. Senior
Hunter Critchlow pushed a pass ahead to Orr that put him in a position to capitalize on a one-on-one with the RIT keeper. It was Orr's first goal this year.
The Statesmen finished with a 14-11 edge in shots. RIT recorded three corners, while Hobart had just two. Kaminer finished with four saves in goal for the Statesmen and Peter Cinibulk had three for the Tigers.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 30, when they host Bard for another Liberty League game at 3 p.m.
