GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team played into overtime for the third game in a row, tying Bard 1-1 in two overtime periods in a Liberty League match today on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen are now 3-2-3 overall and 1-0-2 in the Liberty League.
Bard is now 3-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. Bard goalie Taylor Bond finished with 16 saves in 110 minutes. Hobart is now 1-1-3 in overtime this fall. The Statesmen extended their unbeaten streak to six games, going 3-0-3 in those matches. Hobart recorded 37 shots in today's game. It's the most shots in a game for the Statesmen since they tallied 43 in a 2-1 NCAA tournament win over St. Joseph's (N.Y.) on Nov. 14, 2009.
The Raptors scored early in the first. Alex Mecci notched his first goal of the season from the left side of the box after a pass from Nick Shenberger.
Hobart came inches away from responding just over six minutes later, when sophomore
Kyle Patrick blasted a shot off the crossbar.
The Statesmen came out strong in the second half. Hobart earned three corners early. In the 48th minute, first-year
Pete Critchlow fired a shot on goal. Bond dove to his left and just got his fingers on the ball enough to push it wide of the far post. In the 50th minute,
Pete Critchlow did break through to tie things up for the Statesmen. He was streaking into the box and fired his shot from the left post. Senior
Zach Poretz earned the assist on the play. It was Critchlow's first collegiate goal.
Just over three minutes after his goal, Critchlow drilled another shot that sailed just inches over the cross bar. In the 57th minute, first-year
Juan Widoycovich blasted a shot on goal, but Bond made the point blank save. In the 61st minute, it was sophomore
Nate Cary's turn for a one-on-one with the keeper and a point blank shot, but Bond once again denied the chance. Also in the 61st minute, Bard's keeper was shown a yellow card and Hobart was awarded a penalty shot. Senior
Adrian Colmenares' shot was saved by Bond to preserve the tie.
Early in the first overtime, Bard had a scoring chance. Jake Cicero pushed a pass ahead, attempting to set up Jasper Shorter who was running in right at goal, but Hobart goalie junior
Alec Kaminer came out and dove on the cross, denying the chance. In the second overtime, Meci had a chance at the game winner, when he found himself alone in the box, but he fired his shot wide left.
The Statesmen finished with a 37-8 advantage in shot and a 13-1 lead in corners. Senior
Morgan Sawyer played the opening 45 minutes in goal for Hobart. He made one save. Kaminer came in for the final 65 minutes and stopped two shots.
The Statesmen are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when they travel to take on Ithaca in another Liberty League game at 4:30 p.m.
