#6 Herons blank Bard 3-0

The No. 6 William Smith College soccer team earned its fifth straight win, topping Bard College 3-0 in a Liberty League match played today in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.

The Herons improve to 8-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Raptors fall to 5-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play. It was William Smith's fifth shutout this season.

First-year Julia Keogh started the scoring early for the Herons. She notched her third goal of the year just 3:25 in. After a throw-in near the Bard penalty box line, Keogh received a pass and quickly turned to her left to face the goal. At the left corner of the box, she unleashed a shot that sailed right over the Bard keeper's head, clanged off the bottom of the crossbar, and bounced into the goal.

William Smith added two more goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half. Sophomore Elizabeth Moore notched her second goal of the season in the 49th minute. She one-timed a cross from first-year Merilyn Hinrichs to make it 2-0. In the 56th minute, senior Evie Manning scored on a header after a pass from junior Megan Barwick. Manning leads William Smith with six goals and 13 points this season.

Junior Veronica Romines played the opening 60:12 in goal for the Herons and stopped the lone shot she faced. Junior Kaileen Murray came in for the final 29:48, but did not face a shot. Tessa Greenhalgh finished with seven saves in all 90 minutes in goal for Bard.

William Smith finished with a 21-1 lead in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corners.

The Herons are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when they host Ithaca for another Liberty League game at 4:30 p.m.
