GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 4 William Smith College soccer team shut out No. 2 Messiah 1-0 in a non-league game played today on Cozzens Field. The Herons improved to 3-0-0 this season, while the Falcons fell to 1-1-2.
Today's match was played following the dedication of the Carver-DeLaney Press Box and Stadium Seating. The win marked William Smith's third third shutout this season. Junior
Megan Richard scored William Smith's lone goal in the 49th minute. Junior goalie
Veronica Romines earned her second shutout of the season, stopping all three shots she faced in the game.
Just 3:03 into the second half, Richard collected a short cross from senior
Evie Manning on the right side, and scored into the open left side of the goal. It was her first goal this year. The Herons came close to getting on the scoreboard in the last few minutes of the first half when junior
Megan Barwick blasted a shot off the crossbar.
The Falcons had one of their best scoring chances in the final minute of the second half. Brooke Firestone slid by her defender and fired a shot on goal, but Romines was there to make the stop.
The Herons finished with an 11-9 edge in shots. The Falcons had a 2-1 lead in corners.
William Smith (3-0-0) will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to take on Geneseo in a non-league game at 6:30 p.m.
