GENEVA, N.Y.—Despite scoring with five seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, the No. 9/11 Hobart College hockey team was edged 4-3 by No. 7/10 UMass Boston in an NEHC game in The Cooler this evening. The Beacons scored 52 seconds into overtime to earn the win.
The Statesmen fall to 8-5-4 overall and 5-3-2 in the NEHC. UMass Boston improves to 13-2-0 and 8-2-0 in conference play. Jack Riley and Tyler Sifferlen produced a goal and an assist for the Beacons, and Colin Larkin tallied two assists. Sophomore
Lawson MacDougall led Hobart with a goal and an assist. Senior
Frank Oplinger made 36 saves in 59:10 in goal for the Statesmen, one off his season high, while Bailey MacBurnie stopped 37 shots in 60:52.
The first period proved scoreless, but featured three four-on-four situations. UMass Boston came inches away from scoring when Garrett Gallagher rang a shot off the post in the final minutes of the first.
The second period saw five goals between the two teams, with the Beacons building a 3-2 lead. At 5:23 into the second, junior
Jonas Toupal gave Hobart a 1-0 advantage with a power-play goal after passes from MacDougall and sophomore
Zach Sternbach. The Beacons answered just over three minutes later, when Riley netted a shorthanded tally to tie the game up. Gabe Chuckran and David MacGregor earned the assists. With 8:35 on the clock, it was Hobart's turn to clang a shot off the pipe. Sophomore
Julien Denicourt saw his shot hit the pipe midway through the period on a Statesmen power play.
With 5:26 left in the middle period, Daniel Nachbaur maneuvered through traffic in front of the goal before putting UMass Boston up 2-1 with a power-play tally. Sifferlen and Cody Wickline registered the assists. With 2:40 on the clock, senior
Jordan Haskell knotted the game at 2-2 for the Statesmen. Haskell collected a pass from first-year
Mitchell Spring and lifted a shot towards the goal that went off the back of a Beacon defenseman and into the back of the goal. With 18 seconds left in the middle period, Sifferlen took back the lead for UMass Boston. His goal came after passes from Larkin and Riley.
It wasn't until five seconds left in the third period, after Hobart had pulled Opligner for an extra skater, that the Statesmen found the game-tying goal. MacDougall batted the puck across the goal line in a flurry of action right out in front. Junior
Jack Macnee earned the assist.
However, it was the Beacons who found the game winner just 52 seconds into the extra period. Nolan Redler recorded the goal and Larkin notched the assist. It was Hobart's seventh OT game this season.
Each team produced 40 shots in the game. Hobart went 1-for-6 on the power play, while UMass Boston finished 1-for-2.
The Statesmen are back in action on Friday, Jan. 19, when they play an NEHC game at Castleton at 7 p.m.
