POTSDAM, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team earned its sixth consecutive victory, riding a barrage of 3-pointers to a 91-78 victory at Clarkson University tonight. Junior
Colin Dougherty was one of four Statesmen in double figures, scoring 19 points in the game, including the 1,000th of his career.
Dougherty began the contest eight points away from becoming the 28th Statesmen to reach the milestone. He got all eight in one uninterrupted surge. With Clarkson leading 15-9, Dougherty hit consecutive 3-pointers, both assisted by senior
Luke Ruddy, to tie the game at 15. On Hobart's next offensive possession, the Lockport, N.Y., native sliced right down the lane and converted an easy right handed layup to raise his career total to 1,000 and give the Statesmen the lead.
Dougherty's teammates fed off the significance of the moment and added eight more points without allowing the home team to score. Sophomore
Tucker Lescoe and first-year
Jack Lesure also hit triples during the 16-0 run that gave Hobart a 25-15 lead midway through the first half.
Dougherty finished the game 7-of-12 from the floor with three 3-pointers. Lescoe made his first seven field goals of the night, including six from long range before missing his final shot of the game. He logged a team-high 22 points and four steals.
Over the next seven minutes, Clarkson outscored Hobart 22-11 to take a slim lead, 37-36. Sophomore Matt Higgins and junior Liam Ellis led the comeback with nine points and eight points, respectively. Higgins posted a game-high 23 points while Ellis added 22 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Statesmen (12-3, 7-1) went into halftime with a 45-37 lead by scoring the final nine points of the half. Dougherty started the run with a triple while junior
Jamal Lucas netted two points on the final three possessions. Lucas finished with 19 points, a team-high six rebounds and four steals.
Hobart maintained the upper hand throughout the second half. Clarkson (6-9, 2-6) was able to pull within three, 61-58, on back-to-back 3-pointers by Higgins with about 13 minutes to go. Junior
Sean McKinless (9 pts) quelled the threat with a 3 that launched the Statesmen on a 15-4 run, inflating the visitor's lead to 76-62. From that point on, Hobart led by at least eight points.
The Statesmen finished the game with a season-high 17 3-pointers, one off the Hobart game record. The Statesmen also matched their season-low with just nine turnovers. First-year
Dan Masino was the fourth Hobart player in double digits, producing 10 points.
The Statesmen will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, when they visit St. Lawrence (3-12, 1-7) for another league showdown.
