POTSDAM, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team earned its third straight Liberty League win tonight, defeating Clarkson University 67-53. The Herons shot 47 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Golden Knights 49-29.
William Smith (9-6, 3-5) was led by juniors
Mia Morrison and
Olivia Hughes. Morrison posted her sixth double-double of the season on 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Hughes also scored 14 points and collected eight boards. Heron first-years
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou and
Juliana Gamboa reached double digits as well. Dimitrakopoulou had 11 points and Gamboa logged 10 points.
Clarkson (7-8, 2-6) got a game-high 19 points from senior Devin Sorell and 11 points from sophomore Molly Stewart.
The Golden Knights had a pair of 1-point leads in the first quarter, leading for less than a minute. Clarkson led 8-7 about midway through the first quarter, but the Herons seized the lead for good with an 10-4 run. Dimitrakopoulou and Gamboa started the surge with back-to-back layups. A jumper by Sorell made it a 1-point game, but Gamboa and Dimitrakopoulou followed with consecutive layups for a 15-10 lead. The teams traded baskets to end the quarter with William Smith in front 17-12. The Herons were 8-of-11 from the floor in the opening 10 minutes.
Clarkson closed to within one late in the second quarter, but the Herons closed the half on a 6-2 run to take a 32-27 lead into halftime.
Hughes and first-year
Angela Bussone opened the second half scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the visitors' lead to 11 points. Later in the frame, William Smith rattled off seven consecutive points to build a 47-31 lead midway through the third quarter.
Clarkson managed to close the gap to 10 going into the fourth quarter, but the Herons kept the Knights at arm's length down the stretch, leading by as many as 20.
William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, traveling to St. Lawrence (11-4, 6-2).
