SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Union 1-0 in a Liberty League match on College Park Field this afternoon. The win was the Herons sixth straight and clinched their spot in the conference tournament.

With the win, William Smith is now 10-2-0 on the season and 6-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen fall to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in conference.

Senior
Sarah Olick-Sutphen put William Smith in front in the 35th minute with her first goal of the season. She collected a
Merilyn Hinrichs crossing pass at the left post and buried a shot into the far corner of the cage.

Sophomore
Sheila McQuillen nearly doubled the Herons lead a minute later but her chip shot over the diving goalie trickled just wide of the left post.

Union's best scoring opportunity came in the 63rd minute. Emma Devaney fired a shot on goal from 30-yards out but
Veronica Romines was there to smother the opportunity.

Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and made two saves as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season. At the opposite end of the field Kelsey Hartsoe made five saves in 90 minutes of action for Union. The Dutchwomen defense also cleared a shot off the goal line for a team save.

William Smith finished the game with a 15-4 edge in shots. Both teams had one corner kick.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow for another Liberty League match against Rensselaer. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. It will be the final game of William Smith's season-long four game road trip.
