Brewers top #7 Herons 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y.-The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team was edged by Vassar 1-0 in Liberty League action on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons are now 11-3-0 on the season and 7-1-0 in the Liberty League.
 
William Smith had the game's first scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute when senior Megan Barwick fired a shot on goal from the left post that was stopped by a diving Fiona Walsh. The rebound popped right to sophomore Sheila McQuillen In front of the cage. McQuillen one-timed a shot on cage but Walsh made another diving stop.

Vassar (8-5-1, 4-3-0) jumped in front in the 38th minute. Madio Wallner carried the ball down the right wing and into the box. She fired a shot on cage that was stopped by a charging Veronica Romines. The rebound came out to Skylar Herrera-Ross six yards out. The sophomore collected the loose ball, took two steps, and buried a shot into the open cage. It was her second goal of the season.
 
Walsh was the story of the second half for Vassar, recording 10 saves as William Smith pushed for the equalizer. The Herons had a flurry of chances late in the game but Walsh was up to the task stopping everything that came her way. In the 83rd minute, sophomore Merilyn Hinrichs had a shot from 15-yards out punched over the cross bar by Walsh. On the ensuing corner kick, Barwick put the ball into the box, forcing a scramble in front of the cage. Hinrichs and sophomore Julia Keogh both got shots on goal that Walsh stopped.  Twenty seconds later, junior Elizabeth Moore headed a corner kick just pass the left post. In the 88th minute, senior Sarah Olick-Sutphen fired a shot towards the cage that was turned aside by a diving Walsh.
 
Walsh played all 90 minutes in goal for Vassar making a career-high 15 saves. Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons, stopping four shots.
 
William Smith finished the game with a 25-11 edge in shots on goal, including a 19-3 edge in the second half. The Herons also earned a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. 

 The Herons will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 27, when they welcome RIT to Cozzens Field. William Smith's regular season finale is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
