GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College soccer team concluded its regular season with a 2-0 win over St. Lawrence on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this afternoon. With the win the Herons are now 12-3-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the Liberty League. With the win, William Smith finished on top of the league standings. The Herons have now earned at least a share of the Liberty League regular season title in each of the past 12 seasons.
The Herons took control of the game right from the opening whistle. Senior
Megan Barwick fired a shot that just missed the left post 3:26 into the first half. William Smith continued to apply the pressure in the offensive half of the field finally breaking through in the 29th minute. Junior
Emilie Sauvayre scored her third goal of the season on an arching shot from the left side of the box that beat Samantha Allen into the upper right corner of the cage. Barwick was credited with an assist on the goal.
The Herons doubled their lead six minutes later when sophomore
Julia Keogh notched her fifth goal of the season. She collected a rebound at the penalty dot, spun a defender and buried the shot into the center of the cage. Sophomore
Meghan McKenna was credited with the assist after her initial shot was stuffed by a St. Lawrence defender.
William Smith held an 11-1 edge in shots at the end of 45 minutes.
The Herons had a few opportunities to extend their lead in the second half but Allen made a couple of stops and a goal was waved off due to Keogh being a step offside.
Senior
Veronica Romines made two saves in 90 minutes for the Herons while Samantha Allen made six stops in goal for St. Lawrence.
William Smith finished the game with a 19-3 edge in shots and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Herons will be back in action next weekend as the top seed and host of the Liberty League Tournament. St. Lawrence finishes the regular season with a 9-2-4 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in conference play. The Saints earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and will host Vassar on Tuesday.
