MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-The William Smith College ice hockey team opened its 2018-19 season with a 7-2 victory over Salve Regina at St. George's School Rink this evening. The Herons are now 4-1-0 in their season openers in their fifth varsity season.

Six different players scored goals in the win for William Smith. Junior
Gina Scibetta led the way with a game-high three points on two goals and an assist. Seniors
Jordan Roetzer and
Maura Mulligan and first-year
Abbey Luth had multi point games for the Herons. Sophomore
Olivia Williams started in goal for the Herons, making 15 saves. Two different players scored the goals for the Seahawks. Jennifer O'Connell made 26 saves in goal for Salve Regina.

William Smith opened the scoring a mere 33 seconds into the first period when Scibetta pocketed her first goal of the game. She took the puck to the net and tucked it past O'Connell. Sophomore
Emily Martino was credited with an assist on the goal. It was William Smith's second fastest goal to start a game. The Herons scored 16 seconds into a 4-2 victory over UMass Boston on Oct. 31, 2015. William Smith doubled its lead at the 16:22 mark of the opening period. Sophomore
Jules Kennedy banged home a rebound for her first goal of the season. Roetzer was credited with an assist on the goal.

Roetzer scored a goal of her own just under two minutes into the second period. She redirected a rebound past O'Connell. Senior
Laura Rollins and Luth were credited with assists on the goal.

Carley Bauckham got the Seahawks on the board 3:57 into the second period. Cassidy Lariviere was credited with an assist on the goal.

Mulligan extended William Smith's lead back to three goals with her first of the season just over two minutes later. Scibetta was credited with an assist on the goal. Sophomore
Julia Mings gave the Herons a 5-1 lead 7:35 into third period. She intercepted a clearing pass, carried the puck down the left wing and slipped a backhanded shot past O'Connell. Mings' shorthanded goal was unassisted. Scibetta added her second goal of the game two and a half minutes later.Â

Rebecca Hasting scored at the 16:03 mark of the third period to make it 6-2 William Smith. Suzi Pearson was credited with an assist on the goal.

Luth rounded out the scoring with two seconds remaining in regulation. Her first collegiate goal was assisted by
Stephanie Hampton.

William Smith finished the game with a 33-17 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 1-for-3 on the power play while Salve Regina finished the game 1-for-4 with the extra attacker.

William Smith will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. The Herons and Seahawks will wrap up the season series at 2 p.m.
