MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-The William Smith College ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina 5-2 at St. George's School Rink this evening. The Herons scored twice in the first and twice in the second as they swept the Seahawks to open the 2018-19 season.

Four different players recorded multi-point games for the William Smith (2-0-0). Senior
Maura Mulligan led the way with three points on a goal and two assists. Fellow senior
Stephanie Hampton had a pair of goals. Junior
Gina Scibetta had a goal and an assist in the victory and sophomore
Emily Martino had a pair of assists. Sophomore
Olivia Williams started in goal for the second straight game she made 15 saves in 60 minutes of action. Taylor Chisholm and Rebecca Hasting had a goal and an assist in the loss for Salve Regina. Gretchen Howard made 26 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Seahawks.

Chisholm opened the scoring with her first goal of the season at the 3:15 mark of the opening period. It came on Salve Regina's first shot of the game.

Scibetta tied the game just over two minutes later with her team leading third goal of the season. The power-play goal was assisted by Martino and Mulligan. Mulligan second goal of the season gave William Smith a 2-1 lead at the 13:53 mark of the first period.

Sophomore
Jules Kennedy's second goal of the season at 8:09 of the second period proved to be the game-winner. Senior
Jordan Roetzer and Martino were credited with assists on the goal. Hampton scored the next two goals for the Herons. Mulligan assisted her first and Scibetta and first-year
Emma Duffey assisted on the second. The point was the first of Duffey's collegiate career.

Rebecca Hasting made it 5-2 54 seconds later. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Chisholm.

William Smith finished the game with a 31-17 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 1-for-2 on the power play while Salve Regina finished the game 0-for-2 with the extra attacker.

William Smith will be back in action Nov. 9-10 when it opens the home and UCHC portion of its schedule against Stevenson. The games will be a rematch of last year's UCHC semifinal game that the Mustangs won in overtime.
