GENEVA, N.Y.-The Hobart College soccer team used three second half goals to defeat No. 24 Ithaca 3-0 in Liberty League play this evening. Due recent rain, the match was played on the FieldTurf of Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium.
With the victory, the Statesmen (4-4-2, 3-0-1) are now unbeaten in their last four matches. The loss drops the Bombers to 6-1-3 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play.
Hobart had the game's first scoring opportunity in the 36th minute when junior
Nick Wigglesworth bent a shot on cage from 20 yards out. Ithaca goalie Max Lichtenstein read the play well and punched it away from the net.
Ithaca's first major scoring opportunity came in the 39th minute when Ben Quatresols headed a shot on goal. Senior
Alec Kaminer smothered the scoring opportunity for the first of his six saves in the contest.
The Statesmen opened the scoring in the 59th minute when junior
Ben Barnes scored the first goal of his collegiate career. Off a Hobart free kick, Barnes found himself alone in front of the cage and buried a shot past Lichtenstein. Fellow junior Nick Cary was credited with an assist after feeding a pass to Barnes in the box. Hobart doubled its lead four minutes later when junior
Tristan Cornell Roberts found the back of the net with his third goal in as many games. He accepted a pass from sophomore
Pete Critchlow and fired a shot with his left foot into the left corner of the goal. It was his team leading third goal of the season.
Junior
Kyle Mangold's goal in the 70th minute gave the Statesmen a 3-0 lead. He collected a rebound off of Lichtenstein inside the 18-yard box and shot the ball into the empty net for his first goal of the season.
Kaminer played all 90 minutes in the Statesmen goal. He made six stops on his way to posting his fourth shutout of the season. At the opposite end of the pitch, Lichtenstein made five saves in 89 minutes of action. Tyler Lewin played one minute in goal for the Bombers after Lichtenstein had the wind knocked out of him late in the first half.
Hobart finished the match with a 15-10 edge in shots and earned a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they welcome Clarkson to Cozzens Field. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
