CLINTON, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore goalkeeper
Alexandra DeVito made a career-high eight saves, but No. 15 Hamilton College scored twice in each half to earn a 4-0 win in a non-conference field hockey match tonight. The Continentals improved to 8-2, while the Herons slipped to 4-6.
Lizzie Clarke led Hamilton with two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Julia Booth earned the win, making 10 saves in 67 minutes of work.
It was Clarke who opened the scoring, hitting the back of the cage in the sixth minute. The Continentals added to their advantage in the 24th minute on Sarah Steinbaugh's unassisted goal. Hamilton controlled play in the first half, outshooting the visitors 14-5.
After the break, play evened out, but a one-minute lapse allowed the Continentals to double their scoring total. Hamilton had a slim 10-9 edge in shots in the second half, but made the most of its chances in the 62nd and 63rd minutes. Clarke added her second of the night, assisted by Michaela Giuttari and then 58 seconds later, Clarke set up Giuttari's goal.
DeVito made three stops in the first half and turned back five shots in the second half.
William Smith will return to Liberty League play on Saturday, Oct. 6, when the Herons visit Ithaca (7-3, 1-1). The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
