ITHACA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team scored a goal late in regulation to force overtime, but host Ithaca College scored a 3-2 victory thanks to Maria McGloin's golden goal in the 75th minute.
Facing a 2-1 deficit late in the second half, first-year
Sorcha McCooey and sophomore
Sophie Craig executed a give and go that ended with the former scoring her second goal of the season on a reverse stick shot in the 62nd minute. The second half was otherwise dominated by the Bombers, who outshot the Herons 11-3 and had a 5-1 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alexandra DeVito thwarted Ithaca at every turn in the second half, making six of her career-high 10 saves in the period. William Smith also benefited from a defensive save by senior
Samantha Petruzzo in the 41st minute.
In overtime, Maddie Keppel started the game-winning play, threading a pass to a cutting McGloin toward the near post. She made a move on DeVito and tucked her shot inside the post to secure the victory.
The game got off to a promising start for William Smith. Senior
Fallon Adair batted home a rebound in the eighth minute for an early lead. The Herons had a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in penalty corners in the opening 35 minutes, but Ithaca (9-2, 2-1) took the lead into halftime with back-to-back goals in the final nine minutes of the stanza.
McGloin set up Kristen Rafferty's equalizer in the 27th minute and five minutes later scored a goal of her own for a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Ithaca goalkeeper Savanna Lenker also finished the match with 10 saves.
William Smith (4-7, 1-2) will wrap up its three-game road trip at St. Lawrence (3-6, 1-2) on Friday, Oct. 12. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
