#7 Herons earn 5th straight win

POTSDAM, N.Y.-The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team notched its fifth straight win, knocking off Clarkson 1-0 in a Liberty League match this afternoon.  The Herons are now 9-2-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights slip to 4-7-1, 0-5-0.

Originally slated to get underway at 3 p.m., today's match was moved to a 1:30 start on Hantz Turf Field to avoid thunderstorms that were predicted for later in the day in the North Country.

Junior Emilie Sauvayre's second goal of the season came off a set piece and gave the Herons a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. Following a Clarkson foul, junior Genevieve Carpenter served a crossing pass into the box to Sauvayre. Sauvayre, who was standing on the left post, headed the ball past Clarkson goalie Elyse Green.

Senior Veronica Romines started in goal for William Smith and made a pair of saves, posting her third shutout of the season. At the opposite end of the field, Green made a pair of saves.

The Herons finished the game with a 14-2 edge in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.

William Smith continues its season-long four-game road trip next Friday, Oct. 12, when it takes on Union in Schenectady, N.Y. The match is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
