LANCASTER, Pa.—The Hobart College basketball team had the final shot of the night, but didn't get a friendly roll as Franklin & Marshall College held on to an 85-84 win in the championship game of the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament tonight. The Diplomats improved to 3-0 while the Statesmen slip to 1-1.
Hobart senior
Colin Dougherty led all scorers with 23 points. Senior
Jamal Lucas added 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Junior
Tucker Lescoe and sophomore
Dan Masino each chipped in 10 points. Lescoe, who scored 23 points in last night's win over Stevens, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Franklin & Marshall sent eight players into the game with six finishing in double figures. All-Tournament Team selection Matt Redhead led the way with 17 points. Justin Kupa had 15 points. Ignas Slyka and Watida Mukukula scored 13 points apiece and J.C. McGrath and Matt Groll both contributed 12 points. Groll also grabbed a team-high seven boards and blocked a game-high four shots. Slyka, who also made a game-high six steals, was the Tournament MVP.
The Statesmen shot 47 percent from the floor while limiting the Diplomats to 35 percent shooting in the first half on the way to a 39-31 halftime lead. Hobart used a 7-0 burst late in the half to build a 10-point lead before Redhead netted the final bucket to trim the Statesmen lead to eight at intermission.
A 9-2 run to start the second half put the Statesmen in front by a game-high 15 points, but before the half was five minutes old, Hobart was also in foul trouble. The Diplomats were in the bonus by the 15:18 mark and in the double bonus for the final 12:18. Midway through the frame, the Statesmen still enjoyed a 10-point lead, but over the next two minutes F&M scored seven straight points to make it a one-possession game.
A layup by first-year
Jackson Meshanic (8 pts, 5 rebs) with about five and a half minutes left, pushed Hobart's lead back to seven. Groll answered with a 3-pointer to kick-start a 7-0 run that tied the game at 74. The Statesmen edge back into the lead, clinging to a one-point lead as the game clock approached one minute. Masino fouled out with 72 seconds left and the Diplomats claimed their first lead of the second half on the ensuing possession.
With about six seconds left, junior
Sam Allen (7 pts) used a pump fake to lose his defender and looked headed for an easy layup, but Groll swooped in from behind the forward and blocked his shot to preserve a two-point lead. After Hobart fouled, McGrath sank a pair of free throws to seeming ice the win. Dougherty drilled a running 3-pointer to cap the scoring with 0.3 seconds left. All F&M had to do was inbound the ball to close out the win.
The Diplomats' inbounds pass clipped a wire hanging from the ceiling, turning the ball back over to Hobart. The Statesmen got the ball in to Dougherty, who got his shot off before the final horn, but could not get the shot to fall.
Hobart will travel to Rochester for its next game on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Tipoff against the Yellowjackets is scheduled for 8 p.m.
