Four members of the William Smith College soccer team were named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches All-East teams late yesterday. Senior midfielder
Megan Barwick and junior defender
Emilie Sauvayre were selected to the first team. Senior midfielder
Sarah Olick-Sutphen was voted to the second team while sophomore defender
Maialen Martinez earned a spot on the third team.
Barwick received all-region recognition for the second straight season. The two-time all-league pick led the Herons with 10 goals, six assists and 26 points. Barwick had a season-high five points on two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Ithaca. She also had two goals in wins over Bard and St. Lawrence. Barwick recorded the game-winning goals in wins over Hardin-Simmons, Messiah, the Raptors and the Saints. She was named the 2018 Liberty League Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
In 82 career games, Barwick produced 25 goals, 14 assists and 64 points. She is 20th on the Heron career list for goals.
Sauvayre earns all-region recognition for the first time in her career. The first team All-Liberty League selection anchored a William Smith defensive unit that held its opponents to nine goals. In 21 games, Sauvayre had three goals and an assist for seven points. All three of her strikes were game-winning goals. The Herons rank 13th in the nation with a 0.42 goals against average. William Smith's defense posted 15 shutouts this season.
Sauvayre has seen action in 43 career games. She has three goals, one assist and seven points in her career.
Olick-Sutphen earned all-region and all-league honors for the first time this fall. As a holding midfielder, she played a key role on both ends of the field. Olick-Sutphen had three goals and three assists for nine points this season. She scored the game-winning goals in victories over Union and Rensselaer. Olick-Sutphen added a goal in the Herons 4-1 win over Westfield State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. At the opposite end of the field, she helped William Smith's defense limit opponents to just 6.9 shots per game.
In 84 games, Olick-Sutphen recorded 11 goals and 16 assists for 38 points. She had seven career game-winning goals.
Martinez also played an integral role in the Heron back line. She garnered all-region and all-league honors for the first time in her career. A transfer from University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Martinez had a goal and an assist in 21 games. William Smith's defense ranked 17th in the nation with a .667 shutout percentage. Martinez and the Herons limited their opponents to 6.9 shots per game and 3.14 shots on goal per game. William Smith's 0.42 GAA ranks eighth on the Heron single season list and its 14 shutouts are tied for 10th.
The Herons finished the year with a 17-3-1 overall record. William Smith went 8-1-0 in the Liberty League and earned its 12th straight conference regular season and tournament titles. The Herons advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament.
