Game Recap: Hobart Football | | Ken DeBolt

Sophomore ties career mark on Senior Day

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore Kyle Hackett made his 19th career field goal, tying the Hobart career record on Senior Day, but visiting Ithaca College tempered the celebration with two late scores. The Bombers prevailed 10-3 in a defensive struggle on Boswell Field this afternoon.

Hackett's 28-yard field goal five and a half minutes into the game proved to be the only points of the first half. The Hobart defense forced a three-and-out on Ithaca's opening possession. The Statesmen responded with a nine-play, 38-yard drive that ended with Hackett's three-pointer. The big play of the drive was a 15-yard run by senior Bobby Lewis.

Hackett is now 19-for-19 on field goals in his career. He's tied for field goals made with Shawn Fazio '81 and Eric Ampuja '05.

For the rest of the half, the offenses struggled just to reach midfield. At halftime, Hobart (4-4, 2-2) had outgained Ithaca 113-96.

The teams continued to trade punts to start the second half, until Ithaca (7-2, 4-1) finally broke through. Junior running back Kendall Anderson keyed the Bombers' first scoring drive, rushing for 42 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run. Ithaca also benefited from a 15-yard penalty against the Statesmen.

Hobart, which scored points on its first 25 trips to the red zone this season, looked poised to make it 26 in a row, but executing a 51-yard pass disguised as a reverse from junior wide receiver John DelliSanti to classmate Jake Catalioto the Statesmen ran into some bad luck. They lost four yards on a first down run from the Ithaca 13, got hit with a holding penalty on the next down and then lost a fumble that was painfully close to being an incomplete pass.

The Bombers took advantage of the turnover, adding three points to their lead on a 19-yard field goal by Brian Fallon four minutes into the final frame.

The Ithaca defense, which leads the Liberty League in most defensive categories, shutdown Hobart for the remainder of the game. Senior linebacker Pat Minogue sealed the victory, intercepting Hobart junior quarterback Ryan Hofmann with just over three minutes remaining.

Junior linebacker David McCarthy led Hobart's defense with a game-high 12 tackles, including a sack. Classmate Collin Hudgins added nine tackles and a sack.

Hofmann threw for 100 yards. Catalioto caught a team-high six passes for a game-high 58 yards. Junior Brian Haeffner was Hobart's leading rusher with 26 yards on five carries.

Anderson rushed for a game-high 120 yards and the game's only TD. Sophomore quarterback Wahid Nabi threw for 118 yards. Junior wide receiver Will Gladney had a game-high seven receptions for 44 yards.

Minogue and senior defensive back Tyler Kishbaugh paced the Ithaca defense with seven tackles apiece.

Hobart will wrap up its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. Lawrence (2-7, 1-3). Kickoff at Leckonby Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
