AMHERST, Mass.-The William Smith College ice hockey team's third period rally fell short as it was tripped up by Amherst 4-3 at Orr Rink this afternoon. The Herons are now 10-1-0 overall on the season.

Three different players scored for the Herons. Sophomore
Jules Kennedy (1g, 1a) and senior
Jordan Roetzer (2a), led the way for William Smith with two points each. Sophomore
Olivia Williams made 40 saves in 58 minutes of work. The Herons pulled their goalie trying to tie the game late in regulation. Emma Flynn had a game-high three points (1g, 2a) for the Mammoths (3-4-1). Caitlin Walker made 11 saves in 60 minutes of action in goal for Amherst.

After 13 minutes of scoreless action, the two teams erupted for four goals in the span of a minute. The Herons started the scoring flurry at the 13:04 mark of the first period when first-year
Abbey Luth pocketed her team leading 11th goal of the season. Roeter and Kennedy were credited with assists on the goal. Kennedy won a puck battle below the goal line and dropped a pass to Roetzer in the corner. Roetzer slid a centering pass to Luth who wristed the shot between Walker's legs. Eight seconds later, Kennedy scored her ninth goal of the season. She collected a cross ice pass from Roetzer in the left circle and wristed a shot over Walker's blocker and under the crossbar. Laura Rollins was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Amherst cut into the deficit 21 seconds later when Rose Mroczka redirected a shot from the point past Williams. Mroczka's first goal of the season was assisted by Stephanie Nomicos and Miriam Eickhoff. Eliza Laycock tied the game at two with her first goal of the season. Kenzie MacDonald and Flynn were credited with assists on the goal. Flynn gave the Mammoths a 3-2 lead with three seconds remaining in the opening period. She took a pass from Jocelyn Hunyadi and stuffed the puck between Williams' right skate and the left goal post.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period. Amherst finished the middle frame with a 21-5 edge in shots on goal.

Angelina Wiater added an insurance goal just before the midway point of the third period. Her first goal of the season was assisted by Flynn and Miriam Eickhoff. It was a power-play goal.

Junior
Gina Scibetta made it 4-3 with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. Senior
Stephanie Hampton forced a turnover below the goal line and sent a pass to Scibetta in the slot. Scibetta deked around the goalie and slid a shot past Walker's outstretched pad. It was Scibetta's eighth goal of the season. William Smith pulled its goalie with two minutes remaining in regulation, but despite ample offensive zone pressure, could not find the equalizer.

Amherst finished the game with a 44-14 edge in shots on goal. The Mammoths were 1-for-4 on the power play while William Smith was 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.

William Smith and Amherst will be back in action tomorrow afternoon. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Orr Rink.
