Mammoths double up Herons

AMHERST, Mass.-The William Smith College ice hockey team was defeated by Amherst 4-2 in a non-conference contest at Orr Rink this afternoon. The Herons wrap up the 2018 portion of their schedule with a 10-2-0 overall record.
 
Five different players recorded a point in the loss for William Smith. Sophomore Olivia Williams made 27 saves in goal. Kaitlin Hoang (3g, 1a) and Emma Flynn (1g, 3a) factored into all four Amherst goals.  Caitlin Walker made six saves in the first period. Anna Kruesel came on in relief to earn the victory for the Mammoths, stopping all 20 shots she faced.
 
Amherst (4-4-2) took a 1-0 lead at the 4:19 mark of the first period on Emma Flynn's second goal of the season. Hoang and Jocelyn Hunyadi were credited with assists on the goal. Flynn, who was standing in the slot, one-timed a centering pass over Williams' glove. Flynn returned the favor four minutes later, assisting on Hoang's first goal of the game. Flynn's shot from the left faceoff circle was stopped by Williams. Hoang jumped on the loose puck and flipped a shot across the goal line.
 
Ninety seconds later, William Smith made it a 2-1 game when sophomore Emily Martino scored her third goal of the season. Fellow sophomores Julia Mings and Marykate Martino were credited with assists on the goal. Marykate Martino led a break out down the right wing dropped a pass to her sister Emily Martino, who ripped a low shot between Walker's leg pads. Sophomore Alison Weiss tied the game at two just over two minutes later. Senior Lindsay Brown was credited with an assist on the goal. Brown won an offensive zone faceoff to Weiss on the left wing. Weiss wristed a shot over Walker's blocker and into the net.
 
Amherst took the lead for good at the 3:28 mark of the second period. Flynn picked off a William Smith clearing attempt deep in the offensive zone. She fired a shot on target that was stopped by Williams. Hoang picked up the rebound for her second goal of the game.
 
William Smith had an opportunity to tie the game just past the midway point of the second period, with a pair of power plays. Anna Kruesel, who had come on in relief of Walker to start the second period, turned aside all seven of the Herons shots on the power play.
 
Hoang completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Her fifth goal of the season was assisted by Miriam Eickhoff and Flynn.
Amherst finished the game with a 31-28 edge in shots on goal. Neither team was able to convert on the power play. William Smith was 0-4 with the extra skater while the Mammoths were 0-for-3.
 
The Herons will be back in action next Sunday, Jan. 6, when they welcome Cortland to Geneva, N.Y. Faceoff at The Cooler is scheduled for 4 p.m.
