GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by Cortland 3-2 in overtime in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. The Herons are now 10-3-0 overall on the season.

Carly Weigold scored the game-winning goal 1:23 into the overtime session to complete the come from behind victory for the Red Dragons (4-5-3). She picked up a rebound in the slot and wristed a shot past
Olivia Williams for her second goal of the season. Emily King and Kristen MacDowell were credited with assists on the goal.

Julia Mings scored for the Herons. Sophomore
Emily Martino finished the game with a pair of assists. Williams made 28 saves in goal for William Smith. Grace Schnorr scored twice to finish with a team-high two points. Chelsea Allain made 38 saves, including the final 28 shots she faced.

William Smith jumped out to a 1-0 lead a mere 37 seconds into the contest. Sophomore
Emily Martino forced a turnover deep in the defensive zone and hit Mings in the neutral zone with a clearing pass. Mings beat a defender and wristed a shot past Allain for her seventh goal of the season. The Herons doubled their lead with 29 seconds remaining in the period on Hampton's sixth goal of the season. Kate Klimaszewski collected a loose puck below the goal line. She sent a pass to Martino at the point. Martino fired a shot on goal that was turned aside by Allain. Hampton pounced on the rebound and one-timed a shot past the goalie.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period. The Herons dominated time of possession, outshooting Cortland 18-7.

Schnorr started the comeback 30 seconds into the third period. She wristed a shot from the slot past Williams. Amanda Gaffney and Katie DeVoe were credited with assists on the goal. Just past the 13 minute mark of the period, Schnorr tied the game at two. Samantha Pipin was credited with an assist on Schnorr's seventh goal of the season.

William Smith finished the game with a 40-31 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 1-for-3 on the power play while Cortland was 0-for-9 with the extra attacker.

William Smith will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 12-13, when they welcome King's to The Cooler for a pair of UCHC contests. Faceoff on Saturday, Jan. 12, is scheduled for 7 p.m. while faceoff on Sunday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
