Lescoe nets 22 against Tartans

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior Tucker Lescoe scored a game-high 22 points, but Carnegie Mellon University escaped Bristol Gym with a 70-69 overtime win in non-conference basketball action today. The Tartans never trailed in OT and held a four-point lead in the waning seconds before Lescoe hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Lescoe was 8-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, and 2-for-2 at the line. He also handed out a team-high four assists. Junior Edens Fleurizard posted his second consecutive double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds and was halfway to a triple double with a game-high five blocked shots. Senior Colin Dougherty also scored 10 points with six rebounds.

Sophomore Joey Krempa led CMU with 15 points, sinking half of his six field goals from distance. Juniors Trent Suddeth and Zach Howarth each contributed 10 points. Suddeth collected a team-high eight rebounds. Colin McNeil added seven boards and a game-high seven assists.

Hobart trailed by five with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but Lescoe connected on a triple with about a minute and a half left. The Tartans turned the ball over at the other end of the floor and Lescoe tied the game with about 50 seconds left. CMU missed two chances to reclaim the lead and Hobart missed a three-quarters length heave at the buzzer necessitating overtime.

Fleurizard had two blocked shots in the first minute of OT, but Howarth gave the visitors the first lead with a pair of free throws. Lescoe tied the game moments later, but Krempa countered with a 3-pointer. Sophomore Jack Lesure forged the final tie of the night with a 3. Suddeth's layup with just over two minutes left put the Tartans in front for good and Howarth followed with a pair of free throws. From that point on, Hobart never had a possession with a chance to tie or take the lead.

In the first half, the Statesmen held the lead early, but Carnegie Mellon scored 14 straight points, turning a three-point deficit into an 11-point lead, the largest lead of the game for either team. Hobart chipped away at CMU's lead, going into halftime trailing 33-30.

The Statesmen opened the second half on a 10-2 run. First-year Matt Kitzman capped the early surge, giving Hobart a 40-35 lead four minutes into the stanza.

Hobart (3-5) had a slight advantage over CMU (3-6) in field goal percentage, making 41.3 percent to 39.7 percent. Both teams struggled from long range with the Statesmen making 6-of-27 while the Tartans were 4-of-25. The game was decided at the free throw line with Carnegie Mellon making 12-of-14 at the stripe, while Hobart was 11-of-17. The Tartans also had a 45-38 rebounding edge.

The Statesmen will play their final game of the calendar year on Friday, Dec. 14, when SUNY Poly visits Bristol Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
