PITTSTON, Pa.-The William Smith College ice hockey team wrapped up the United Collegiate Hockey Conference portion of its schedule with a 7-0 win over King's College at the Revolution Ice Centre this afternoon. The Herons, who were receiving votes in this week's D3hockey.com poll improve to 15-5-4 on the season and 11-2-3 in the UCHC.
William Smith, which had already clinched its first postseason berth, will enter its first postseason as the No. 2 seed in the inaugural UCHC conference tournament. Elmira, which secured the regular season title with a win yesterday, and the Herons will advance directly to the semifinals as the top two seeds. The Soaring Eagles will host the semifinals and finals March 3-4 in Pine Valley, N.Y. Stevenson, which is currently in third with 20 points through 14 games, will not be able to catch the Herons, 25 points through 16 games, despite having two games in hand.
Junior
Lindsay Brown recorded a game-high four points on two goals and two assists in today's game. Senior
Catherine Linehan (1g, 2a) and first-year
Julia Mings (1g, 2a) finished the game with three points each. First-year
Olivia Williams made nine saves as she recorded the second shutout of her career.
Mings opened the scoring 72 seconds into the game. Her eighth goal of the season was assisted by junior
Maura Mulligan. Mulligan broke up a Lady Monarch clearing attempt at the blue line and hit the puck forward to Mings. Mings carried the puck to the high slot and wristed a shot into the upper left corner of the net over Emma Zeveney's blocker. Linehan doubled William Smith's lead just before the halfway point of the first period. Her fourth goal of the season was assisted by Brown and first-year
Emily Martino. Martino collected a loose puck at her own blue line and hit Brown with a tape-to-tape pass. Brown carried the puck to the right faceoff circle and slid the puck to Linehan in the slot. Linehan one-timed the shot into the upper left corner of the net.
Just under five minutes later, Brown notched her first goal of the game. Standing on the right goal post, she got her stick on a
Lexi Nottke shot from the point and redirected it past Zeveney. Linehan was credited with the secondary assist on the goal. Junior
Egan Sachs-Hecht notched her second goal of the weekend and third of the season at the 18:48 mark of the first period. Linehan and Brown notched assists on the goal. Brown won a battle for the puck along the end boards and threw the puck to the front of the net. Linehan tapped the puck to Sachs-Hecht in the slot. Sachs-Hecht's initial shot was blocked. She picked up the rebound and slapped the puck across the goal line.
Senior
Rebecca Begley notched her sixth goal of the season 48 seconds into the second period. She forced a turnover below the goal line and stuffed the puck inside the left post.
Emily Martino and Brown added power-play goals in the third period. Martino's fourth goal of the season was assisted by
Gina Scibetta and Mings. She picked the top left corner of the net from a tight angle at the 9:38 mark of the period. Mings and
Jules Kennedy were credited with assists on Brown's eighth goal of the season.
Emma Zeveney made 54 saves in 60 minutes of action for King's (0-19-1, 0-13-1).
The Herons finished the game with a 61-9 edge in shots on goal. William Smith was 2-for-8 on the power play while the Lady Monarchs were 0-for-7.
The Herons will conclude their regular season next Saturday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Cortland for a non-conference game. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
