GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 78-47 Liberty League win over Union College in Bristol Gym this afternoon. The Herons made a season-high 11 3-pointers in the game, tied for fourth on the program's single game list and the most since making 11 at Bard in January of 2017.
William Smith had four players in double figures, led by junior
Mia Morrison's 16 points. Senior
Kendra Quinn-Moultrie, who was honored prior to the start of the final home game of her career, added 15 points. First-years
Juliana Gamboa and
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou contributed 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Quinn-Moultrie and Gamboa led the Herons from long range, making three triples apiece.
William Smith had a 36-25 rebounding advantage with a balanced effort. Gamboa collected a team-high six caroms. The Herons shot a season's best 54.2 percent from the floor and connected on 61.1 percent of their 3-point tries.
Union junior Nicole Conley produced a game-high 17 points, grabbed a team-high six boards, and blocked a game-high four shots. Sophomore Elly Vaughan chipped in 12 points.
The Herons (15-10, 9-9) held the Dutchwomen (7-17, 4-14) scoreless through the first seven minutes of the game, building an 8-0 lead. The Herons led 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. By the time the second quarter was five minutes old, William Smith had stretched its lead to 20, 34-14. Quinn-Moultrie had seven points during the surge. The Herons closed the half on a 10-4 run to carry a 52-28 lead into halftime.
William Smith shot 62 percent from the floor, including 8-of-11 from 3-point range, in the opening 20 minutes. Union shot 36 percent. Gamboa led all scorers with 13 points at the break. Conley led the Dutchwomen with 12.
The Herons led by as many as 31 and no fewer than 21 in the second half.
William Smith will be the No. 6 seed and will travel to face No. 3 seed Ithaca (19-6, 14-4) in the first round of the Liberty League Championship Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
