SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—William Smith College junior
Mia Morrison became the 17th Herons to record her 1,000th career point tonight. She finished with a team-high 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, but host Skidmore College earned a 78-56 Liberty League win.
Morrison was limited to two first-half points in just 12 minutes. In the third quarter, she poured in seven points to move within three points of the career milestone. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Herons worked the ball around the perimeter looking for a seam in the Thoroughbreds' zone defense. With time running out, the ball landed in Morrison's hands just to the left of the top of the arc. She fired off a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and swished it, hitting 1,000 points exactly.
Morrison, who does most of her scoring in the paint, drained another 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. Tonight marked her ninth double-double of the season. She was joined in double digits by first-years
Juliana Gamboa and
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou, who chipped in 14 points and 12 points, respectively.
Skidmore (13-9, 11-4) got a game-high 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds from senior Kelly Donnelly. Haley English added 15 points, seven assists and four steals. Caite Opfer also scored 15 points while Ari Fustini added 12 points.
Skidmore torched the nets in the first half, connecting on 53.3 percent of their shots and 8-of-9 at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. The Thoroughbreds also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Herons 21-11. Skidmore senior Kelly Donnelly paced all scorers with 13 points before halftime. Junior
Olivia Hughes led the Herons (12-10, 5-9) with seven first-half points.
First-year
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou converted a traditional 3-point play late in the first quarter to cut Skidmore's lead to 15-12. The Thoroughbreds scored the final four points of the frame to take a 19-12 lead. That four-point burst became 14 straight when Skidmore extended its run in the first three minutes of the second quarter. The Herons stopped the run with four consecutive points, but Skidmore answered with a 14-2 run to build a 25-point lead with about two and a half minutes left in the half.
Hughes and senior
Kendra Quinn-Moultrie closed out the first half scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Herons' deficit to 43-24 at the break.
In the second half, the Herons got no closer than 18 points down.
William Smith will be back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 10, when the Herons visit Bard (0-21, 0-15). Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
