Statesmen split matches in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla.-The Hobart College tennis team split its final two matches of its spring break trip to Florida today. The Statesmen opened the day with a 9-0 win over Colorado College at Sanlando Park. This evening, Hobart was topped by Division I Hofstra 6-1 at the USTA National Campus.  Following today's split, Hobart is 3-4 on the season.

The Statesmen finish their swing through the Sunshine State with a 2-2 overall record. Hobart defeated Hope 5-4 on Monday and lost to 28th-ranked Denison 8-1 on Wednesday.

This morning against the Tigers (8-10), Hobart opened up a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play thanks to three 8-4 wins. Junior Jonah Salita and sophomore Alan Dubrovsky collected their team leading ninth doubles win of the season, besting Logan Pepperl and Sam Hum in the top spot. First-year Walker Anderson and junior Jonathan Atwater won at No. 2 and juniors Patrick Gray and David Reinharz won in the third spot.

The Statesmen won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Dubrovsky collected his 11th win of the season, besting Noah Forman 6-3, 6-3. It was Dubrovsky's first win at No. 1 this season. Reinharz clinched the overall victory Hobart, besting Brian Chen 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. Gray did not lose a game, knocking off Jackson Livingood 6-0, 6-0. Atwater collected his eighth win of the season and first of the day in a super tiebreaker at No. 2. He bested Hum 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

With Hofstra being a Division I school, Hobart's match against the Pride (8-5) was played using Division I scoring rules. The major difference between Division I and Division III scoring is that doubles counts as one result so once a team wins two doubles matches they earn the one doubles point. Hofstra won at No. 1 and No. 2 and led 1-0 headed into singles play. Gray and Reinharz improved to 2-0 on the season with a win at No. 3.

Atwater collected his second win of the day with a straight sets win in the No. 3 spot. Reinharz battled tough but was edged in a superbreaker.

Hobart will be back in action on Sunday, March 25, when it hosts Stevens. The match with the Ducks is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. inside Bristol Field house.
