William Smith downs Nazareth 8-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with an 8-1 victory over Nazareth this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 8-3 on the season.
 
William Smith took a 2-1 lead into singles play thanks to a pair of doubles win. Senior Michaelann Denton and first-year Dina Rigas, the reigning Liberty League Doubles Team of the Week, notched an 8-3 in the No. 1 spot. The win was the third straight for Denton and Rigas who are now 9-6 this season with a 7-4 record in the top spot. First-years Charlotte Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen bested Elizabeth Karstedt and Maeve Morgan at No. 3 8-2. Engebrecht and Nguyen are 6-1 at No. 3 doubles this spring. Nazareth (14-4) earned a 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
 
The Herons swept singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Denton and junior Alex Greenberg won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Denton is 8-6 in singles play this year with a 2-1 record in the top spot. Greenberg notched her fifth win of the season and is 1-0 in the fifth spot. Sophomore Leland Barclay recorded her fifth straight win and team-leading 12th win of the season besting Elena Alteri 6-, 6-2 at No. 6. Sophomore Kate Foley battled past Elizabeth Karstedt 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 at No. 2. Foley is now 10-2 on the year and has won her last seven matches. Charlotte Engebrecht notched a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3 over Jackie Lisak. With the win, Engebrecht is 7-5 this year. Rigas completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
 
William Smith will return to Liberty League play on Saturday when it travels to Canton, N.Y. The Herons are scheduled to take on St. Lawrence at 1 p.m.
