REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.-The Hobart College rowing team posted three wins at the Stanford Invitational this weekend. The Statesmen second varsity eight led the way with two victories.

Racing was held under clear skies with a cross tail wind on Saturday and a stiff headwind this morning.

Hobart's second varsity eight started the competition off on the right foot. The Statesmen opened Saturday's racing with a head-to-head victory over Georgetown.

Remington McGuire, and
Alberto Wray powered the boat down the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:02.2. The Hoyas crossed the line three seconds later.

This morning Hobart's 2V was paired with Santa Clara University. Voto, Krimmel, Giovenelli, Robinson, Luce, Maratovic, McGuire, and Wray turned in another impressive performance, beating the Broncos by 18.9 seconds. The Statesmen posted a time of 6:28.4.

Yesterday afternoon, the second varsity eight competed against Stanford's second varsity eight. The host Cardinal raced down the course with a time of 5:55.9. The Statesmen finished six seconds later.

"We are definitely excited to see these guys keep getting faster as we turn our attention to Navy, Columbia, and George Washington in two weeks," Bugenhagen said.

Henry Vachon were paired with Santa Clara's varsity eight, which was also receiving votes in the USRowing poll. The Statesmen powered down the course with a time of 6:20.2, 7.9 seconds ahead of the Broncos.

On Saturday, Hobart was matched with a pair of nationally ranked teams. In their first race of the day, the Statesmen competed against 18th-ranked Georgetown. The Hoyas edged the Statesmen by 2.3 seconds. Â Hobart returned to the water in the afternoon to race against 12th-ranked Stanford. The Cardinal pulled away for a 15 second victory.

"The 1V did exactly what they wanted to do this morning," Bugenhagen said. "They bounced back from a disappointing Saturday and put together a strong race this morning against Santa Clara."

Tommy Hayes also competed three times on the weekend. In their first race on Saturday, the 3V was paired with California's 4V. The Golden Bears pulled away for an open water victory. Saturday afternoon, Hobart raced against Stanford, finishing three seconds back. Sunday morning, the Statesmen raced Stanford and Santa Clara and crossed the line second. The Cardinal won the heat by four seconds, Hobart was second and the Broncos rounded out the field. The Statesmen stopped the clock with a time of 6:38.7.

"The 3V is starting to pick up a head of steam and we all like the direction they're heading as we enter the final weeks of the spring," Bugenhagen said.

Hobart will be back on the water in two weeks. The Statesmen travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on Columbia, George Washington and Navy.
