GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team wrapped up the home portion of its schedule with a pair of Liberty League wins at the HWS Tennis Center this weekend. The Herons battled to a 5-4 win over Union on Saturday before defeating Bard 8-1 this afternoon. William Smith is now 11-5 overall this season and 4-2 in the Liberty League.
Against the Dutchwomen, the Herons swept doubles play to take and early 3-0 lead. Senior
Michaelann Denton and first-year
Dina Rigas bested Megan Brown and Natalia Pezzuco 8-0 at No. 1 singles, while first-years
Charlotte Engebrecht and
Katelyn Nguyen won 8-0 at No. 3. Sophomores
Kate Foley and
Allie Perron notched an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
Junior
Alex Greenberg defeated Madeleine Hamparian 6-2, 6-4. The win was Greenberg's eighth of the season. Sophomore
Leland Barclay logged her 14th win of the season, knocking off Cathy Xing 6-0, 7-5. Union made the match interesting, winning singles matches in the top four spots. Perron, Denton, and
Charlotte Engebrecht all forced three sets but were edged at Nos. 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

In this afternoon's match with the Raptors, William Smith again swept doubles play to take 3-0 lead in the match. Foley and Greenberg lost a single game as they notched an 8-1 win in the No. 2 spot. Denton and Rigas notched their third straight win. Ferari and
Charlotte Engebrecht notched an 8-3 win at No. 3.
The Herons closed out match with five wins in singles play. Perron improved to 5-4 on the season with a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 1. She has played all nine matches in the No. 1 spot. Nguyen logged her third singles match of her rookie campaign with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3.
Olivia Engebrecht defeated Isabelle Scarborough 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth spot. It was the first win of her collegiate career. First-year
Karen Bulnes and sophomore
Morgan Hamre rounded out the match with wins at No. 5 and 6, respectively. Bulnes notched a 6-1, 6-2 and is now 5-1 on the year. Hamre is 3-1 in singles play after a 6-0, 6-1 win.
William Smith will close out the regular season next weekend, April 28-29, when it travels to the Capital Region for a pair of Liberty League matches. The Herons will take on Vassar on April 28 and Rensselaer on April 29.
