Dubrovsky wins 20th, Statesmen defeat Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Hobart College sophomore Alan Dubrovsky won his 20th singles match of the season as the Hobart College tennis team defeated Vassar 5-4 at the Joss Courts this afternoon. With the win, the 36th-ranked Statesmen have clinched the No. 3 seed in the six-team Liberty League tournament.
 
Hobart (12-6, 7-2) took a 2-1 lead in the match, following three tightly contested doubles matches. Dubrovsky and junior Jonah Salita started the match off with a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. The northeast region's ninth-ranked doubles team, according to the latest Oracle/ITA Division III Men's Rankings, are 17-7 overall with an 11-6 record at No.1. Juniors Jonathan Atwater and David Reinharz gave Hobart a 2-0 lead in the match with a 9-7 victory at No. 3. They are 2-2 as a duo this year. Vassar (6-12, 4-4) earned its doubles point with a 9-7 win at No. 2.
 
First-year Walker Anderson gave the Statesmen a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Anderson is 16-6 this season. Salita added to Hobart's lead knocking off Allen Sokolov 6-3, 6-2.  Salita is 12-7 with a 5-2 record in the second spot of the lineup. Dubrovsky clinched the overall victory for the Statesmen thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win in the top spot. He is 20-7 on the season and is 7-1 against the Liberty League. Dubrovsky is the first Hobart player to win 20 matches in a season since Peter Piné '05 won 20 in the 2003-04 season. Atwater and Reinharz forced three sets in their matches but were defeated by their Brewer opponents.
 
Hobart will be back in action next weekend May 4-6 when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y., for the Liberty League championships. The Statesmen will face St. Lawrence in Friday's first round match up.
