Engineers slip past Statesmen

LATHAM, N.Y.-The Hobart College tennis team dropped a tightly contested Liberty League match to Rensselaer 6-3 at Tri-City Fitness this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 5-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in Liberty League play.
 
The Engineers (9-2, 3-1), who were nationally ranked in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III Men's Collegiate Tennis Rankings, swept doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. In a battle of regionally ranked opponents, sophomore Alan Dubrovsky and junior Jonah Salita, who were ranked eighth in the latest poll, were edged by Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie, who were ranked seventh, 8-5 at No. 1. RPI added 8-4, 8-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
 
The teams split the six singles matches. Zack Ebenfield gave the Engineers a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. Hobart narrowed the margin to 4-2 with straight set wins at No. 6 and No. 2. Senior Harry Nichols posted his fourth win of the season, knocking off Suryansh Patel 6-0, 6-3 in the sixth spot. Salita, the ITA Northeast Region's 23rd ranked singles player, bested Imrie 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. With the win, Salita is 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the No. 2 spot. Clay Thompson clinched the overall victory for RPI with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3. The Engineers took a 6-2 lead with a win in the No. 4 spot. Dubrosky closed out the match, posting his team leading 14th win of the season. Dubrovsky, the region's 17th ranked singles player, slipped past Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez, the region's 12th ranked singles player, in a superbreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7, at No. 1.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Apr. 8, when it travels to take on St. Lawrence. The match in Canton, N.Y., is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
