William Smith soars past Cortland

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team cruised to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Cortland in Bristol Field House yesterday. With the win, the Herons are now 6-3 on the season.
 
William Smith swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match. The Herons won 8-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 and 8-1 in the third spot. Senior Michaelann Denton and first-year Dina Rigas notched their team leading seventh win of the season when they defeated Mia Hayes and Nikaylah Williams. Denton and Rigas are 5-4 at No. 1 this season. Sophomores Kate Foley and Allie Perron defeated Isabella Arrigo and Tina Wertman to improve to 3-2 at No. 2 doubles. First-years Charlotte Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen teamed up to beat Jenna Bellair and Hope Biersach at No. 3. Engebreht and Nguyen are 4-1 this spring.
 
The Herons won all six singles matches in straight sets. Rigas and fellow first-year Karen Bulnes did not lose a game, winning 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively. Rigas defeated Keliann Camp for her fifth win of the season while Bulnes bested Tina Wertman for the fourth victory of the season. Sophomores Leland Barclay and Morgan Hamre posted 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Barclay's win was her team leading 10th of the season. Hamre is 2-1 on the year after topping Olivia Terry. Foley improved to 8-2 on the season thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mia Hayes at No. 1. It was Foley's first victory at No. 1. Charlotte Engebrecht defeated Nikaylah Williams 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 for her fifth win of the season.
 
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, Apr. 8, when it hosts Oneonta in Bristol Field House. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon.
