William Smith cruises past Oneonta

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team defeated Oneonta 9-0 in Bristol Field House this afternoon. It was the Herons' second consecutive 9-0 non-conference victory.
 
William Smith (7-3) took control of the match, sweeping doubles play. Senior Michaelann Denton and first-year Dina Rigas rolled to an 8-2 victory over Julieta Eulau and Alyssa Brault. Denton and Rigas are a team-best 8-6 in doubles play this year with a 6-4 record in the top spot. Sophomore Kate Foley and Allie Perron improved to 4-2 this spring with an 8-3 win in the second spot over Samantha Felice and Mya Lipscomb. First-years Charlotte Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen knocked off Danielle Swierczyna and Gianna Papini 8-1 at No. 3. Engebrecht and Nguyen are 5-1 as a duo this spring.
 
While doubles play was going on, sophomore Leland Barclay improved to 11-1 on the year, toping Swierczyna 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Barclay has won four straight matches and is 9-1 in her last 10. Foley extended her win streak to six matches with her win at No. 3. She dropped only two games, knocking off Lipscomb 6-1, 6-1. Foley is 9-2 on the season. In the top spot, Perron bested Brault 6-2, 6-2. The win improved Perron to 3-3 this spring, playing all six matches in the No. 1 spot. Denton posted her seventh win of the season besting Eulau 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. Denton is 7-6 on the year with a 3-2 record in the No. 2 spot. Engebrecht and Rigas closed out the match with straight set victories at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Engebrecht defeated Michelle Halpern 6-3, 6-2 while Rigas beat Felice 6-4, 6-2.
 
William Smith will be back in action on Thursday, Apr. 12, when it travels to Rochester, N.Y. for a match against Nazareth.
