SALISBURY, Md.—Senior goalkeeper
Alec Kaminer made six on his way to his 11th career shutout as the Hobart College soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 victory over Salisbury University in the first round of the Elmer Lord Classic.
Kaminer was on top of his game, especially in the first half. He recorded four stops before halftime, none bigger than his robbery of Peter Gutoskey in the 42nd minute.
Staked to a 1-0 lead on senior
Alex Weisbein's header that was served up by sophomore
August Martini in the eighth minute, Kaminer had to stare down Gutoskey as he stood over the ball at the spot. Salisbury was awarded the penalty after a Seagull was hauled down inside the box. Kaminer came up huge, stoning Gutoskey with a diving stop to his right and preserving the Hobart lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, junior
Tristan Cornell Roberts lofted a cross in from the left that found its way to
Mouhamed Diouf. The senior ripped a low roller that just evaded Trevor Brookhart's hands for a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute.
Brookhart finished with four saves.
Salisbury (0-1-0) held a 12-10 advantage in shots, although both teams put six on frame. The Seagulls also enjoyed an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, but couldn't solve Kaminer.
Hobart is back in action tomorrow, when the Statesmen face St. Mary's College of Maryland at 1 p.m.
