GENEVA, N.Y.-The second-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Geneseo 3-0 in non-league action on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Sophomore forward
Sheila McQuillen factored into all three goals as she finished the night with four points.
McQuillen opened the scoring for William Smith (4-0-0) in the 32nd minute when she pocketed her second goal of the season. She picked off a clearing pass at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a low shot past Julia McDonald into the net.
The Knights (2-2-1) gained a territorial advantage in the later stages of the first half but could not solve the Herons stifling defense.

Sarah Gray scored her first collegiate goal. McQuillen was credited with an assist on the goal. McQuillen dribbled the ball down the right wing and centered it to Gray who was crashing the net. Gray redirected the ball with her right foot past Marissa Quimby into the goal. Sophomore
Julia Keogh made it 3-0 just under four minutes later. She was also on the end of a McQuillen crossing pass. From the right wing, McQuillen sent the ball to Keogh on the left post. Keogh volleyed the ball past the diving Geneseo goalie for her team-leading third goal of the season.
The Knights best scoring chance of the game came in the 82nd minute. Mackenzie Griffin collected a crossing pass at the top of the arc and fired a shot at the left post. Senior goalie
Veronica Romines made a diving stop to preserve the shutout.
The Herons outshot the Knights, who came into the game averaging 19 shots per game, 18-4. William Smith earned eight corner kicks to Geneseo's two.
First-year
Amanda Kesler earned her fourth straight win making one save in 74 minutes of action. Romines came on for the final 16 minutes and made one stop. Julia McDonald and Marissa Quimby split time in goal for the Knights. Each goalie finished with four saves.
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host Rochester. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Cozzens Field.
