GENEVA, N.Y.-The second-ranked William Smith College soccer team was edged by Rochester 2-1 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons are now 4-1-0 on the season while the Yellowjackets improve to 3-1-1.

William Smith nearly opened the scoring in the third minute but senior
Sarah Olick-Sutphen's shot from the top of the 18-yard box trickled just past the left post.
Â
Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on Lexi Bostley's first goal of the season. Following a Yellowjacket corner kick, Bostley picked off a clearing attempt and buried a shot past
Amanda Kesler.
Â
William Smith finished the first half with a 9-4 edge in shots.
Â
Rochester wasted little time in the second half, adding an insurance goal in the first 54 seconds. The Yellowjackets capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Herons to make it 2-0. Carolyn Richards picked up a loose ball right in front of Kesler, shielded it from the goalie and sent a short pass to Jorie Freitag. Freitag collected the ball and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the open goal.
Â
The Herons cut the deficit in half in the 57th minute when
Megan Barwick scored her team-leading third goal of the season. She collected a drop pass from Olick-Sutphen at the top of the box and sent a shot past Emma Schecter into the back of the net.
Â
Following Barwick's goal, William Smith continued to apply offensive pressure but could not find the equalizer. Sophomore
Sheila McQuillen had the best opportunity to tie the game in the 68th minute. Her shot from 20-yards cleanly beat Schecter but rang off the crossbar.
Â
Kessler played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made three saves. Schecter made eight stops in 90 minutes in goal for the Yellowjackets.
Â
The Herons finished the game with a 21-6 edge in shots and earned an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
Â
William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 19, when it travels to Dallas Pa. The Herons will take on No. 19 Misericorida in their final non-conference contest of the season.
