Statesmen fall to #15 Red Dragons

CORTLAND, N.Y.-The Hobart College soccer team was defeated by 15th-ranked Cortland 1-0 in non-conference action this evening. The Statesmen are now 1-4-1 on the season while the Red Dragons are now 5-0-2.

Hobart dictated the pace of play in the opening 45 minutes, finishing with a 9-3 edge in shots. Sophomore Pete Critchlow had the game's first scoring chance in the third minute, but Cortland goalie Sean Kelly smothered the shot. In the final 15 minutes of the half, Hobart kept the Red Dragons pinned in their defensive end but the Statesmen could not find the back of the net. Junior Kyle Patrick had a shot blocked and his follow up shot trickle past the left post.

Junior Tristan Cornell Roberts had Hobart's best scoring opportunity late in the first half. In the 39th minute, he found himself all alone in front of the net but Kelly ran out to stuff his scoring attempt.

Senior Derrick Acheampong and Cornell Roberts had scoring opportunities early in the second half for the Statesmen but could not put the ball past Kelly.

Kelly's save on Cornell Roberts at 74:40 launched a Red Dragon counter attack. At the opposite end of the field, Ivan Dam found Jake Keller alone at the top of the 18-yard box. Keller one-timed the ball past Alec Kaminer into the goal. It was Keller's third goal of the season.

The Statesmen had an opportunity to tie the game at one in the 81st minute but Kelly punched Jack Fell's dangerous shot over the crossbar.

Kaminer played all 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen, making two saves. At the opposite end of the pitch, Kelly stopped six shots in the Cortland goal.

Hobart finished the game with a 13-8 edge in shots and earned 11-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they open Liberty League play with Skidmore. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Cozzens Field.
