GENEVA, N.Y.—For the fourth consecutive meeting, Hobart College and Skidmore College have played to a draw. Today's match featured a pair of first half goals and a whole lot of stingy defense.
Statesman senior goalie
Alec Kaminer finished the match with a career-high nine saves, a total equaled by his Thoroughbred counterpart, junior Sebastian Bosch.
The visiting Thoroughbreds (4-1-3, 1-0-1 Liberty League) opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Senior Ben Caples fired a long throw-in toward the near post where junior Ted Roach headed it, tucking it neatly inside the far post for his first goal of the season.
In the 34th minute, Hobart (1-4-2, 0-0-1) got a free kick five yards off the sideline and 20 yards out from the end line. As the Statesmen made their run in front of the Skidmore goal, first-year
Nick Kriak was fouled, earning a penalty kick. Junior
Binjo Emmanuel drilled his shot into the lower left corner of the goal for his first tally of the season.
Skidmore had the best chance to end the match in regulation when the Thoroughbreds broke in on Kaminer with an odd-man rush. Skidmore brought the ball into the box on the right side and crossed to an uncovered Ben Zieff on the left side, but his teed up shot from 12 yards out ricocheted off the left post.
Less than two minutes into the first overtime period, Hobart had a great scoring chance. Junior
Tristan Cornell Roberts sent a cross into the box that sophomore
Kyle Mangold headed toward the lower right corner of the goal, but Bosch swooped in to smother the shot.
The Statesmen nearly earned the win in the 104th minute thanks to the Skidmore defense. Hobart sophomore
Kyle Walsh unleashed a long throw into the box that a Thoroughbred defender headed onto his own goal, but Bosch was there to punch it out and senior
Mouhamed Diouf volleyed the rebound wide of the left post.
The last best chance at a winner belonged to Hobart junior
Jack Bizub, who fired a bending shot from the 18 that Bosch just got enough of to push it over the crossbar in the 108th minute.
Hobart finished the match with a slim 17-16 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Statesmen will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26 when they visit RIT (4-2-1, 0-1-0). The Thoroughbreds will wrap up their three-game road trip at Rensselaer (3-4-1, 1-0-0) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29.
